  1. Why should I have my cylinder head(s) ported? How much more power should I expect from my engine?

  2. I have a cylinder head that I have ported and want it copied. Can you do that and if you can, how much does it cost and how much time does it take?

  3. If I want an exclusive port design just for me (or my business), will my design be confidential and not be used on anyone else's cylinder heads?

  4. I want my cylinder head(s) ported. How do I go about having you machine them for me?

1. Why should I have my cylinder head(s) ported? How much more power should I expect from my engine?

The cylinder head is an integral component that controls how air flows in and out of the engine. By reshaping and enlarging the ports, you allow the engine to take in and expel a greater volume of air. When you allow an engine to breathe better, you can add more fuel which means the engine can produce more power. How much more power is a very tricky question though. There are so many different variables that affect engine power, each port design on each engine combination will produce different results. As a rough estimate the following is typical for many port designs:
  • 4-6cyl N/A - 10-50hp
  • 4-6cyl Forced Induction - 25-100hp
  • 8cyl N/A - 30-100hp
  • 8cyl Forced Induction - 50-150hp
Again, these are approximate figures, the exact performance improvement is not guarantee. Of course, if you start with an as-cast stock cylinder head and upgrade to a CNC ported cylinder head you will see greater power gains then if you started with a previously hand ported cylinder head.

2. I have a cylinder head that I have ported and want it copied. Can you do that and if you can, how much does it cost and how much time does it take?

M2 is a leader in custom CNC ported cylinder heads. We can machine nearly every type of cylinder head from motorcycles to mountain motors. If you have a port design you want copied, we will have to look at it to make sure it is within our capabilities. We will then digitize the ports and combustion chamber and create a CNC program for it. Send us your cores to machine and that's it! Typically, engineering costs $2000 per style cylinder head (which includes fixture fabrication, reverse engineering and program creation). Machining cost is extra. If you have a large initial order, we can work out volume pricing on engineering and machining. Please contact M2 for details. It will take us anywhere from 4-8 weeks from receiving the model head to sending a CNC'd copy back to you.

3. If I want an exclusive port design just for me (or my business), will my design be confidential and not be used on anyone else's cylinder heads?

Absolutely. We pride ourselves in our confidentiality and loyalty to our customers needs.

4. I want my cylinder head(s) ported. How do I go about having you machine them for me?

All you have to do is send your head(s) to us in NJ. Please include all of your contact information so we can call you when they get here and verify what you would like done to them. We will create an account for you and give you a timeline of when to expect them to be finished. Pack them VERY well. Bubble wrap and packing peanuts DO NOT work. We have received many damaged heads packed this way. Use lots of cardboard, foam or rolled newspapers. If you shake the packed box and you can hear the head moving around, it needs more packing. If you want to be 100% guaranteed your head is packed right, please take it to a UPS Store or any approved mailing and shipping store. They will pack it and UPS guarantees it.

5. I'm an engine builder or company that wants to do a high volume of CNC ported heads. Can you handle high volume orders?

We can handle orders of any size. In the past we have done high volume production work for Brodix, Canfield and Edelbrock. We have three 5 axis CNC machines that can be run almost 24-7 so we can definitely handle volume work. We also have a loading dock and forklift so we can handle packages or pallets of almost any size. For pricing, please contact M2.
